The objective of the works was to upgrade electrical RCDs to sixteen hostels throughout Australia. These 16 hostels provide over 480 beds, meals and laundry services for indigenous individuals, couples and families with short term crisis, medical, medium & long term and transitional accommodation on a daily basis.
Many of these properties are built pre 2000 and not fully compliant to current Australian standards – AS 3000. Other issues identified include; lighting circuits with positive & neutral crossover causing new RCD’s to trip after installation, installed RCD’s had been recalled (worldwide) by Eaton after extensive recall requests.
Several 3 phase circuits were not RCD protected including; commercial kitchen equipment, laundry facilities and several Main Switch Boards and Switch Boards were not big enough to house all required RCD’s. It was noted that some guests would hide prohibited items in potentially dangerous locations including live electrical equipment, electrical compliance for guest safety is paramount.
